How Much Time Do You Need To Practice Memory Techniques?
Sadly, you can’t just learn memory techniques and all of a sudden, you can memorize and learn everything without trying. You are going to have to put in work, but exactly how much work do you need in order to improve your memory?
When I was competing for the USA competition, the World Memory Championship, a game show in China, and a game show in California, I was practicing two to three hours every single day. Now, I’m not saying that you have to practice two to three hours with memory techniques. What is the answer to the question? It depends. I know you don’t like that answer, but it really does depend because it comes down to how much you want to improve your memory.
Improving your memory is kind of like working out. If you go to the gym once a week, you’re going to get in shape a little bit, get a little bit stronger. But if you go to the gym five or seven times a week, you’re getting so much stronger and getting in shape a lot faster compared to going to the gym three times a week or once a week.
It really does come down to how much you want to prove your memory, what level you want to be on, and only you can decide that for yourself. I can’t say, “Hey! You need to train an hour a day to reach your level,” because I don’t know what your current level is. There is a basic amount of time you can practice to improve your memory. I would say that’s about 15 minutes a day because that’s enough time to practice the techniques you’re learning.
If you’ve practiced for five minutes a day, over time you’re going to improve your memory, but it might take you a month to get to the point where you want to be. On the other hand, if you practice an hour a day for a week, you would get to the same place you want to be but way faster. So it’s one week of training an hour day compared to five minutes a day for a whole month. So it’s really up to you on how much time you want to put in in order to reach the level you set for yourself.
When I competed at the USA competition, it was three months so I didn’t have much time to train. I knew people had been training for years, maybe a year or two. You had a qualifying round then the championship round where you compete for the title of memory champion. I just want it to be in the championship rounds, so I trained for two to three hours a day because I thought that’s how much time I needed in order to put myself in the championship rounds. You need to take time out and think about how much you want to improve my memory? Do I want to be at competition level? If you want to get to competition level, it’s going to take a lot of practicing and training.
Or do you want to improve your memory so you can learning things a bit easier? You need to know this first before getting into memory techniques because if you aren’t putting the right amount of time in, you are not going to get your results.You can’t just learn one technique, then all of a sudden everything’s gonna fall into place. No, you have to practice. But how much is up to you? But I recommend at least 15 minutes a day if you’re so not sure.
