Master the Basics of Memory Techniques
Only if you got that special memory technique, you would be able to memorize a deck of cards in 30 seconds or learn a new language easily. Sadly, this is not true. It all comes down to mastering the basics. Pretty much all information is made up of words, numbers, and some form of symbols. But what happens is when people learn memory techniques, they want to jump right in and start learning all these things: languages, books, or vocabulary, but they never take time to master the basics.
Look, what’s a book? It’s just a combination of words in a specific order so if you want to memorize a book, you’d better be able to memorize any word out there. How do you develop that skill? You practice memorizing random words because a book or a definition are just words.Once you master memorizing random words, you’re able to create any image for any word out there regardless of the complexity. The same idea is true for numbers because if you’re memorizing phone numbers, birthdays, or historical dates, there’s going to be numbers involved. You have to master your number system then practice and master memorizing numbers.
Now, here’s the thing, I’m not saying you have to be at memory competition level mastery. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Memorizing 80 digits in one minute. No, you don’t have to do that. Memorizing 50 words in one minute is pointless to you, right? You just have to have a great grasp on the basics because whatever you’re trying to learn, it’s going to be in some form of words, numbers, or symbols.
The mastering the basics idea is something that you really do need to understand. I wish more people would take time on mastering the basics because it makes a huge difference. The basics are the foundation for every single memory technique you will learn so if you skip out on them, you are guaranteed to run into problems that you will have trouble solving. It is up to you if you want to avoid the problems or run into them head first.
